Swing for Scholarships raises nearly $10,000 for student scholarships

The 13th annual “Swing for Scholarships” golf tournament, held on September 9th, was successful in raising approximately $9,700 for the Centennial Merit Scholarship program at Southeast Regional College.  All 46 golfers were treated to a gorgeous day of golf, a delicious steak BBQ, and a variety of prizes at the Weyburn Golf Club.

Marketing Coordinator for Southeast Regional College, Dave Harazny, was very satisfied with the tournament results.  “I found some notes from last year’s tournament that said ‘Make warmer weather a priority’,” laughs Harazny.  “We couldn’t have asked for a better day for golf which always helps, but regardless of the weather our southeast community comes through each year with their support.  I can’t give enough praise to our sponsors, golfers, and volunteers who continually participate in this event.”

Proceeds from this tournament will be matched by the Government of Saskatchewan through the Centennial Merit Scholarship program.  “The $9,700 raised from this event actually translates into $19,400 in scholarships,” emphasized Marla Smith, Acting Executive Director of the Southeast Education Foundation.  “Our students are very grateful for the financial support that our scholarships offer, and the College is very grateful for the Government’s continued commitment to this program.”

The Swing for Scholarships golf tournament is truly a regional event with sponsors and participants from in and around Weyburn, Estevan, Assiniboia, and Regina.  When asked about next year’s tournament, Harazny added that the organizing committee will be sitting down soon to discuss the successes of this tournament, areas for improvement, and plans for next year’s event.
