Program Overview:

This one year certificate program is designed to provide the student with a sound knowledge of business practices and principals and to develop that student's ability to relate and apply this knowledge in adapting to current social and economic conditions.

After successful completion of this program, students may continue with a second year at SIAST - Palliser Campus in Moose Jaw to specialize in one of the following areas:

  • Accountancy
  • Administration
  • Computer Information Systems
  • Financial Services
  • Marketing
  • Human Resource Management

The University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan recognize a number of the courses toward their degree programs. Business Diploma graduates may obtain a full two-year credit toward their Post Diploma Bachelor of Management degree from the University of Lethbridge.

 

Course Description:

First Semester:

ACCT 122 - Intro. Financial Accounting I:
This course is an introduction to accounting principles and procedures, an emphasis is placed on bookkeeping techniques for merchandising concern. In addition, there is an introduction to accounting for current assets and their relationship to the income statement.

ADMN 126 - Management:
This course is an overview of the development of management theory and practices. The course content includes organizing, planning, leading and controlling. You will focus on decisions in different types of environments.

BCOM 120 - Business Communications I:
This course develops an understanding of the principles and process of business communications. Basic grammar and the writing of business letters and memoranda are emphasized.

COAP 137 - Introduction to Simply Accounting:
This course will provide students with an introduction to the use of a computerized accounting software package. Your studies will focus on self-guided exercises using the general, payables, receivables and inventory ledgers.

COMP 120 - Information Systems I:
In this course, students will learn about computer concepts and terminology, computer applications, the impact of computers on society, the Internet, and communications technology as applicable to the academic world as well as the business environment. Applications software includes the Microsoft Office Suite (Word - word processing, Excel - spreadsheets, and PowerPoint - presentations graphics). The text used in the class also includes tutorials covering Internet concepts and WWW browsing skills.

ECON 120 - Micro Economics:
This course is designed to familiarize the student on how consumption and production decisions are made in a market economy. Economic concepts of supply, demand, cost response to price changes, production, equilibrium, and income distribution are analyzed.

FIN 120 - Mathematics of Finance:
This course deals with commercial problems involving simple interest, partial payments, and commuting a series of obligations. It continues with a wide variety of problems involving compound interest, ordinary annuities, deferred annuities, amortization of debt, sinking funds, and valuation of bonds. Practical applications are stressed throughout the course.

 

Second Semester:

ACCT 125 - Introductory Financial Accounting II:
This course is a continuation of introductory accounting in which the accounting for other assets, payroll and other liabilities, and equity are introduced. Accounting for partnerships and corporations is introduced with an emphasis placed on corporation accounting.

BCOM 121 - Business Communications II:
This course introduces students to the techniques of research and report writing. The students write a formal report and a number of short reports. Employment interview techniques are studied. Business and professional speaking is emphasized including participating in group discussions and meetings.

ECON 121 - Macro Economics:
This course is designed to familiarize the student with problems in economic policy, and the choices which face a modern economy, social accounting, national income, consumption, saving, government spending, taxation, investment, interest rates, money and banking, foreign trade, and balance of payments are all analyzed.

HR 120 - Introduction to Human Resource Management:
This course will focus on an overview of human resource management and practices. You will learn the impact of systems analysis, job analysis, recruiting processes, performance appraisals and unions.

MKTG 120 - Marketing:
This course examines the concept of business activities and institutions that direct the flow of goods and services from the producers to the consumer. A project or case study is used for the practical application of the various marketing functions - product planning, pricing, distribution, and promotion.

STAT 120 - Statistics:
This is an introductory course in statistics with an emphasis on business applications. It deals with the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of statistical data. Descriptive statistics are introduced by summarizing and presentation techniques using tables and graphs. Measures of the centre and of variations are approached as summary statistics related to distribution curves. Probability theory is presented as the link between descriptive and inferential statistics. Statistical inference is presented by way of business applications based on simple random sampling, confidence intervals, hypotheses testing and regression/correlation analysis.
